Rating: Popcorn Approved (GO!)

I couldn’t find a trailer to go with this post, so a still will just have to do.

I saw this at the Telluride Film Festival and it is not for the faint-hearted or prudish. There is full-on nudity of Michael Fassbender (hey, I’m not complaining) and of the various women who come as quickly as they go in his life. So if excessive amounts of nudity and sex are not for you, steer clear of this film.

Carey Mulligan makes an appearance as the dysfunctional sister of the sex-addicted Brandon (Fassbender). Her unexpected visit truly turns Brandon’s world upside down, with the both of them spiraling out of control.

Steve McQueen’s second film is impressive, with various moments in the film that illustrate he is a very capable director, in particular the subway scene comprised of the characters stealing glances at one another, cleverly amounting to more sexual tension than the actual depiction of sex in the film does. Truth be told, its either a hit or miss film, depending on the individual. This film is worth watching, and thought provoking, but only if you’re comfortable with sex scenes that are soft-porn worthy. Kids, if you thought drugs were bad…

I cannot wait for this to come out.

I cannot wait for this to come out.

Photo

Better to be Left Unknown

Rating: No ‘pop’ with the corn (So-So)

Three nights ago, I thought Unknown would be a good movie to watch at midnight, snuggled in bed (per usual) snacking on tomato and mozzarella cheese sprinkled with basil and marinated in olive oil, ready to be thrown into mind-boggling action sequences. How terribly wrong I was. I admit, this movie was not a complete disaster, but there was definitely something lackluster about the plot. You’d think a hybrid of the Bourne Trilogy and Taken would be an explosion of fast, clever editing, cool camera tricks, non-stop, heart-pounding action and an equally fascinating plot that would make you forget all notions of reality.

Unfortunately it does not live up to this promise, and instead comes across confused as to how it can convincingly marry ‘psychological thriller’ with ‘action’. Kudos to Diane Kruger and Bruno Ganz for being the only likable characters, although I do find it highly ironic that Kruger plays an illegal immigrant living in Germany. It is a shame since I normally like Liam Neeson, but his hollow character development coupled with (what I found to be) his annoying obsession with his wife, of whom he conveniently only has flashbacks of them having sex and not much else, really doesn’t do anything for me. Frank Langella’s cameo just seems to be carelessly sandwiched into the final moments of the film for the sake of plot convenience. As gorgeous as January Jones is, her pretty face cannot make up for the seemingly mis-matched acting.

Granted, cheesy and cringe-worthy moments are at their minimum, but the film leaves much to be desired. It tries to achieve the status of an “intelligent action film” but falls flat on its face. In short, the film ends with a whimper and not a bang.

Don't See "The Trip" With An Empty Belly

Rating: Popcorn Approved (GO!)

Since I love food and movies, I thought I’d write my first movie review about The Trip. One word of warning, whatever you do, DO NOT under any circumstances watch this movie on an empty stomach, which is the grave mistake I made one Friday night. I sauntered into the vicinity, naively unaware of the gastronomic adventure I was about to witness, and would crave, crave to taste. (Luckily I was armed with a Häagen-Dazs ice cream bar in the cinema, needless to say it was consumed in seconds.) Even just ten minutes into the film I already found myself scooting to the edge of my seat, in the fantastical hope that I would magically disappear into the screen myself and join Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon at their table.

Visual feasts aside, (yes, the movie is quite literally a feast) the premise of The Trip is partially fictional, with Coogan and Brydon playing impersonations of themselves. Commissioned by The Observer, together they tour restaurants of northern England and in the process, reveal Brydon’s obsession with scallops. It is a light-hearted, joyful ride, stuffed with hilarious impersonations of renown actors such as Sean Connery, Michael Cane and Hugh Grant. Perhaps watching two grown men babble at one another like an old couple, critiquing each other’s impersonations might not be your cup of tea, but the movie is a delicious delight of scrumptious meals and quirky humour that would not be worth missing.

Photo

"Some people like my advice so much they frame it on the wall instead of using it."

“Some people like my advice so much they frame it on the wall instead of using it.”
